Heres a challenge for you , where is the most unusual place that you found a coin in your collection and do you still have a soft spot for it and tell people about it.
Metal detecting finds are included! -

I have found one or two coins by searching for "farting" on Ebay, it amazes me how many people miss that all important "H".
The one that sticks in my mind believe it or not, is my one and only hammered coin found whilst detecting, it was a Tealby cut halfpenny. I have little interest in collecting hammered coins, but this one sits proudly in my collection!! Not exactly found in an unusual place, but as far as my coin finds go it was certainly unusual!!
I also remember finding a Victorian Shilling that had been used as a packer to level a fire grate. It was worn smooth, but nevertheless an unexpected find!! -

Ah, yes it was some 39 years ago! I was 10 years old and living on Cyprus and when visiting Salamis saw a bit of something on a berm on the side of the cleared old Roman road as it came into town. It was rather worn and oxidized but turned out (as I found out 30 years later) to be a nummus of Justinian I. Still have it though should not admit to it as I guess it may be contraband these days... -

Not exactly an unusual place, but some 10 years ago, I found a jubilee head 1893 sixpence in a junk shop pile of coins in Hastings. Its about fine condition, and cost a princely 50p!! How it had never been snapped up by someone, I'll never know. -

Well I think up to now dave has the most profit from a coin record buying a coin for 50p that is worth around £300.
Bet your eyes nearly popped out and you started shaking finding that one!
Just shows it can be done! -

To be honest, I initially wasn't sure what I had seen, and had to check up on it before I went back to buy it - I was a bit of a novice then, and wasn't absolutely sure that it was what I thought it was!!
The other fantastic deal I got was a 1671 Crown in about fine condition at a small antiques fair a few years ago. I piad £25 for it, but it was only when I got it home that I discovered that it was the Vicessimo Quarto edge, and was shown as R5 or R6 in ESC, and unpriced in Spinks. Was I pleased with that one. -

Peter,I have never seen an 1893 Jubilee Head coin of any denomination.
One of the most interesting finds I did make was a few years ago.I was helping out my boss's twin brother in Auckland.I found a British 1723 SSC 1/- with the French Coat-of-Arms at the date.I ended up landing it for NZ$125.I still have this coin.
Another interesting coin I picked up was just over 2 years ago.It was a New Hebrides silver 100 Francs Essai (pattern coin). It was a coin that I recognised.I had seen it in the collection of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, who decided to sell off some of their collection. There was a collection of New Zealand 19th. Century traders' currency tokens that was up for auction.I wrote a letter to the paper criticising the R.B.N.Z. for wanting to sell their collection. In the end,my boss's twin brother bought this familiar coin. When I saw it,he & I were happy with a price of NZ$150 for it.
The New Hebrides coinage was issued by the French, but because the New Hebrides was an Anglo-French condominium, these coins are legitimate British Commonwealth issues. The New Hebrides became an independent British Commonwealth member state under the name 'Republic of Vanuatu'.
I also have a very worn British 1905 2/6 that still has the date legible,& I also have a British 1952 6d.,which is extremely hard to find.

I think the 1893 sixpence is a mule with the old obverse being twined with the new reverse by some careless employee at the mint , i would hazard a guess that some careless mint worker twined up the dies and a whole days production of these escaped into circulation , hazard a guess at 7,000 or so coins
Probably only seventy or so remain as collectors items these days as they circulated heavily and are seldom found in good condition , fine being a good grade
I guess it was put at the bottom of a drawer in the late fifties or so with a pile of other coins and remained there till the owner died , and the relatives just sold it to a junk shop for probably 10p or so. -

I pick up a steven penny at a boot fair in hastings ( seems to be a hot spot for bargins ) for 13 quid, the penny is GVF+ and unrecorded. I also won a fartrhing on ebay 185I last 1 being roman, again unrecorded. But the most bizzare find must be a dog walk around carisbrooke castle on the isle wight, i found a charles ii halfpenny NF jet black with out a green spot on it. -

When I was a 10 or 11 year old schoolboy in the 60s another boy suddenly produced a large copper disk from his pocket while we were walking home from school and started rolling it down the road. It looked like some sort of a paper weight but when it finally came to rest at the bottom of the hill it turned out to be a cartwheel twopence, sadly already badly disfigured by the undignified treatment its owner was inflicting on it. I had never seen such a huge copper coin before and no idea what it was but was already avidedly combing through every one's change and swapping them new coppers for Victorian and Edwardian ones. I told the boy it was a shame to destroy something that looked very much like a coin to me and which could be valuable but he didn't believe something so large could be a real coin. He had found it in a drawer or an attic at home and said there was another smaller one that he hadn't beaten up yet and he would give it to me, if I liked coins, since no one in his family cared about them. The next day he gave me a 1806 halfpenny in fine condition. At the time I couldn't figure out what this was either because it was bigger than circulation halpennies but smaller than a penny but I soon got hold of a book and identified both the halfpenny and the twopence. Even though it is not worth much I still treasure the halfpenny as it is the first coin I ever owned of a type that was no longer in circulation and awakened me to the idea of going further than just combing through change to acquire coins. -

Although it's not an unusual place, I feel I ought to mention it here. My hobby was started off at the age of 13 when I found a 1937 penny in the high street of where I lived at the time. Until then I'd had absolutely no interest in the hobby, but as soon as I got this my curiosity kicked off. I still have it in my collection (initially I collected very unwisely, going for quantity over quality let's say!) and despite having God knows how many other 1937 pennies kicking around I can still point out "that one". -

i found a 1933 1/2d in one of those 2p pushing machines in an arcade... it fell out with some 2p's at random lol
i found my favourate piece, my 1858 small date farthing at my dealers.. his book was using peck, therfore he didn't have the thing listed, £5 well spent lol -

1858 small date farthings sometimes appear on ebay as just normal 1858 farthings indeed it is normal as not many coin books list the variety.
Some dealers even miss it.
I think about 7 or 8 a year appear on ebay on average , but their apearance is sporadic so often you can pick them up at around double the normal price of this coin.
Not many have appeared this year and as colin seems to have stoped buying them up for his pension fund , they might fetch better prices
Depends on if it is high grade (They are rare above VF)or if it has really taken someones eye.
The 1845 large date is a different matter , they always excite a lot of interest - esp if in better grade.
I think it was 2005 when about 4 or 5 appeared and all sold for large prices - I am sure some sellers must have really been surprised! Maybee shocked! -

I got an unusual find the other day - walking home from work at about 10pm
I spotted a couple of coins glinting in the street lights went over and picked them up .
A 20p coin a brand new 10p and a britannia 2008 50p in mint condition (Mintage 700,000!), lucky they had not been there long looks like they might have fallen out of someones pocket as they went to a nearby cash machine in a rush.
Really nice find and a coin that will be increasingly hard to find in future years esp in top grade , as the ones in circulation become more and more worn -

found some coins where i expected... just some unexpected coins
spent around £8 on a 600g of coins (just over 200) which is just usual foreign stuff, to mainly get bits for other countries
was researching a few of the silver bits and found i had a 1939 rhodesea 6D (200k minted) in EF thats a good £50-60 coin alone
another recent bulk buy, i got for another piece i wanted for my collection, about a 1uid its not much for 5-6 coins, i took photos of some old pennies, as edward pennies of 1908/9 wore to a differant colour. i was amazed to find when i uploaded the first picture i had a F169 1909 penny (where the 1 points to the tooth) -

Scott,
Can you please post a link here to your gallery that is up on OmniCoin?
That is a very nice Southern Rhodesian 6d. that you've got shown up on http://www.coinnetwork.com/group/britishcoins .
I do collect Southern Rhodesian coins myself, but the silver coins are very hard to find, despite them being priced stupidly cheap in Krause.

http://www.omnicoin.com/user_view.aspx?id=ScottO <-- full omni collection
to hand it looks better, the odd dark part on obverse looks normal :/
speaking of lucky finds i missed 1 and probably my best
fair grade 1728 plumes sixpence... in a tin at my dealers... the price of the coins in this tin... 25p each
and today, netted a george III off centre strike halfpenny in fine grade sadly, its a good off centre sadly its the date that missed the coin (the exerge is only 1-2mm from the bottom of the coin) -

Scott,
I used to upload photos to both Banknotebank & Omnicoin, but I have now given up on that.
I will consider doing so again if Anton gets his act together & replace his crappy gallery program on both websites with the cool one from http://www.photopost.com ,which http://www.zeno.ru uses.
Eventually,I will be uploading photos of my collection onto http://www.tantaluscoins.com .

Last Saturday (13th. of March 2010),I picked up a British 6d. off a dealer at an interclub meeting for the bargain price of NZ$1! Later on,I looked at the date - 1835.
That's the very first time I have picked up a King William IV coin for NZ$1.
