Hi I dont see any Introduction Catergory, wouldn`t it be a good idea for any new member joining to have the opprtunity to introduce themselves. They can list their location (general one obviously), the coins the specialise in eg, British, non British and also which coin(s) they actually collect.

Excellent idea, there a a fair few current members here that I am not sure of thier collecting interests.
I have been on the forum since its current form, I specialise in copper pennies and Halfpennies between 1825-1860, fractional farthings and model coins, always happy to help with any queries/questions relating to my interests.

    Hello All,

I'm very new to collecting. Started on ebay but became disillusioned.

Still casting about to some extent but finding myself increasingly fascinated by pennies, halfpennies & farthings. Seems to me there is excitement to be had in buying auction lots and searching through for (near) proof coins, rarities and oddities. The research that has gone into these originally low value coins is amazing and the variety & quality that is available after over 100 years in some cases is equally amazing.

Just found a halfpenny with a Geo V head and what seems to be a completely blank reverse - not a trace of a stamp. If the reverse has been machined off - well they've done a fantastic job of it - it seems to be same thickness as a "normal" coin.

    Onward and upward!

    Roy.

Welcome Roy, things have been a little slow on the Forum recently, I see you have similar interests to myself.
Ebay is a bit of a minefield, with too many dealers overgrading coins, mostly through buying or seeing a badly graded lot and repeating the process when relisting themselves.
The massive jump in price from the next grade from the last makes the gamble, if they get away with it, fairly worthwhile.

    Hi to John,Aidan and Roy,
As I suggested this particular Forum I suppose I had better add my details to it. I live in the Manchester area and collect Farthings 1672-1956. I have a collection of most British coins from Half pennies to Half Crowns also, these are stored away. I started off collecting the older Silver coins just for the Silver content in the late 70`s. A friend gave a couple of old Farthings and is hasn`t stopped since. Hope more people will contribute to this Forum and put their details here. Surely their isn`t just 4 of us.

    Hi

Well; I spent nearly 10 years in the old Cardiganshire before moving to Powys! That might account for my growing interest in the farthing!

    Well scotto
Manchester used to be the home of farthing specialist AKA john minshull who was a great mentor to me.
I must admit i lost interest for around 17 years but it was mostly the dificulty in getting nice coins at reasonable prices.
Ebay has turned me into a reborn collector.
Sure there are a lot more of us out there

As a young collector I had a lot of time for John.
With my orders he often put a supprise better piece in.
When speaking to Colin it was he who supplied John with most of his stock.
At one time John and Colins lists ran along each other.

& yes it was Parr Lane

You can find an expert named Colin Goode online.

    He has a website at http://www.aboutfarthings.co.uk .

He is interested in not only Farthing coins, but also Farthing traders' currency tokens from across the British Commonwealth, including the historic 1766 Farthing trader's currency token from British America that is extremely rare.It commemorates the Stamp Act of 1765.There is also a 1/2d. as well. Both of them were designed by Paul Revere.

    Aidan,

Thanks; Colin has already helped me with UK farthings and his website is already in my favourites list. I've a great to learn about UK Farthings before I consider the tokens. I assume the Paul Revere is THE Paul Revere?

Congrats on getting that 1851 farthing D over D nadeem.
They are indeed a great rarity - I have yet to see one , let alone have the pleasure of owning one.
They are massively under-rated in rarity by all coin price guides - not sure why but part of the reason might be they never seem to come up for sale

Looks like something is deffo going on there but it could also be a slanted E that has been corrected.
I will leave the opinion on that to the experts - of course a higher grade coin would help - pity only 40 or 50 so of these coins exist!

I send same pictures to Colin, and he has also contemplated re-cut E from slanted E as a possibility. I have two 1851 1/4d with D over side way D. Comparing both, I can see the difference. I agree something is deffo. If some one carved side way D than corrected it, I wonder at what stage released, he has made a blunder?
