Issued solely for use in Malta. Really, they should not be included in the English series but as collectors have always wanted to acquire this fascinating short series of coins, they are being retained here.

(Compare Norweb 1116, R.J.Ford 341 and Magnay 244). Very few known specimens, so it is possible to keep track of each known piece. About FDC with much brilliance and 100% sharp detail.Close comparison with known photographs reveals this is the Norweb specimen (19.11.1986 Lot 1116) though the original tickets are not with the coin. This is only the second time we have ever listed one in these web pages.

Note on 1878:

In 1878, both Large Date and Small Date exist.

On the Small Date variety, there is the additional and previously unrecorded feature of the NG of FARTHING entered over a G between the two letters. This is clearly visible in grades above VF
