BMC 768. 26mm diameter. Newton's problems with the striking of copper had obviously not been completely solved. Stress fractures were still evident, as this example demonstrates superbly. (Newton remained Master of the Mint until his death in 1727.) Old toned scratch on obverse, otherwise about EF with hints of lustre.
Purchased from Simon Porter, 7-2-1981. Ex Dr B. Nicholson (Lot 170)
