Following intensive scrutiny of a large number of coins, it is now possible to describe eight distinct varieties for 1881H:
Type A : H is virtually in contact with the first 8.
Type B : H is slightly nearer the first 8 than the second 8 but the H is still well clear of the linear circle.
Type C : H is centrally placed between the two 8's but well above the linear circle.
Type D : H is still centrally placed but lower and almost in contact with the linear circle. Also, thicker lighthouse with rounded top, thicker helmet plumes closer to T.
Type E : H is slightly nearer the first 8 than the second 8 but the H is much lower than in Type B and now almost in contact with the linear circle.
Type F : H is lightly double-struck, with the underneath H off-set about 40% to the left. Attempts have been made to erase the underlying H but the right hand vertical stroke of the H is still visible between the two new uprights and the top and bottom serifs on the left hand vertical can also be seen.
Type G : H is very strongly double-struck and blatantly obvious even on low grade specimens. This actually appears to be Type C struck over Type A.
Type H : The H is further to the left, so that the right edge of the first 8 is in a direct line with the left upright of the H. The H is equi-distant from the first 8 and the linear circle.
